"Countdown" was demasted on the return delivery from The Isla Mujeres Race. She has been re-fitted by Ross Yachts in Clearwater and re-powered with all new Schurr Sails.
The owners criteria was for strong reliable sails that will withstand constant abuse from, long distance, shorthanded cruising.
The main and staysail were made form a soft finish 9.62 ounce HIGH ASPECT Dacron from Challenge Sailcloth. The Genoa was made from 7.62 ounce HIGH ASPECT. No cruising laminates, no over-engineered panel layout just quality materials, design and workmanship. Both genoa and staysail are set on Profurl Classic furling systems and the genoa is fitted with a foam luff pad and reefing re-enforcement for the ultimate in headsail reefing control.
This boat will be sailed out of New Orleans both cruising and competing in the Cruiser/Racer Fleet. These specialized racing rules allow only one Mylar sail, (the biggest Genoa) no Kevlar/spectra and a limited number of sails in general. This is wonderful for the owners since there is no "arms race" in terms of sail inventory. These criteria put pressure in the sailmaker to get the very most out of each sail, while each sail must cover a very wind range on a boat this size.
MAINSAIL - Dacron Crosscut with a radial head section. The fabric in a 8.6 ounce Matrix Dacron with a rip stop pattern in the weave. Tapered Blue Streak battens with the top two full length and the bottom two extra long. The sail is also fitted with two reefs, flat reef and a loose foot. The mast was fitted with a Harken batslide system to ease hoisting and lowering.
155% GENOA -Triradial panel layout using the Dimension polyester laminate line. Taffeta backed material where the sail beats on the mast, rigging and lifeline in the tacks and a lighter triply in the luff area.
BLADE - 8.8 ounce firm finish Dacron with a cross cut panel layout. This sail was designed with the new fuller blade cambers to allow more power in the lower wind ranges and to give the boat that extra power to punch through the Lake Pontchartrain heavy air chop.
RACING SPINNAKER - this oversized sail is based on a 12" penalty pole and made from Bainbridge Stabilkote IV. All purpose vertical and horizontal cambers for a sail that will be covering a very wide wind range.
CRUISING SPINNAKER - 3/4 ounce Performance Coat Nylon installed in an ATN snuffer. This sail will make the difference between sailing and motoring on light air trips. The snuffer will make the sail a breeze to handle short handed.
This Pensacola couple are gearing up for another season of PHRF racing as well as the St. Pete to Isla Mujeres Race in the spring. They came to Schurr sails help get more speed out of the boat in windy up-wind conditions.
140% (#2) Genoa and Blade - both sails are made from Dimension KVT Kevlar/Mylar laminate. The KVT is a combination of Kevlar, Vectran and Technora permanently bonded to Mylar film. Both sails have a light Dacron taffeta backing for durability and variable cloth weights to make the sail strong where the high loads are and to save weight where the loads will allow.
