Projects - 2001

J/46 Another "proper Yacht" from J-boats. This customer is an experienced sailor and knows what he wants - reliable sails. He bought the boat for miles of hassle free sailing so he came to Schurr Sails for the power source. The main is 9.6 ounce Dacron with four full battens mounted on Antal sliders and two substantial reefs. The Working Jib is also 9.6 ounce Dacron with a Dacron UV suncover and a foam luff pad. This sail is mounted on a Harken Unit II furling system.  The spinnaker is a rainbow colored .75 ounce asymmetrical  with a triradial panel layout. This huge sail will be quickly and easily controlled with an ATN dousing Sleeve.

Furling Genoas For many sailors the most practical way to approach an all purpose furling/reefing genoa is still woven  Dacron. The laminated fabrics allow less stretch, but in terms of cost and durability, they can be hard to justify. Another drawback to the laminated fabrics is mildew. Particularly in the hot humid southeastern US, water can get in between the mylar and whatever fiber it is laminated to, and it can't get out. Throw in some heat and sunlight and you get an ugly case of mildew that can't be washed out. We are just finishing two Dacron cross furling genoas- one for a Hunter 30 and the other for a Sabre 38. They both utilize Challenge High Aspect Dacron, triple stitching, foam luff pads, custom reef reinforcement  and sunbrella for UV protection. Both of these sails will still be going strong in 10 years.

Capri 14.2 Great little boat from Catalina Yachts. Although this inland lake customer does not race wants sails that are reliable and fast. Both Main and Jib are 4.5 ounce and the jib is mounted on a wire luff Harken small boat furler.

J/33 An all Kevlar 155% made from Dimension SP 15 and SP10 with a triradial panel layout. This sail is strong enough to go up to blade conditions; truly an all purpose #1 genoa.

Flying Scots The Mid winters in Panama City are coming up fast. We are doing several suits from our standard racing design - 3.8 ounce super hard cloth (180B HTP from Dimension) with radials the head & clew and foot shelves in the main. The spinnakers are .75 ounce nylon with a bi-radial panel layout which provides the large projected area that the race course demands. We are also in the middle of five suits for an inland sailing school. 5.0 ounce soft cloth, double stitched seams. Perhaps the young sailors who use these sails for their first sailing experience will be hooked for life!

We are also making a Cal 20 main for day sailing, a Cyclone 13 main and 3 Sunfish sails with artwork for a local Hotel/Resort.

Jan Brant's Olsen 29 Kokopelli won it's class in both legs of the 2001 Bermuda 1-2. The race is sailed single handed from Newport, Rhode island to Bermuda and double handed back to Newport.

The sail inventory was done on a budget , but it included new main and blade made from Dimension Kevlar Edge and a new asymmetrical  "monster" made from  .75 ounce Porcher nylon. Also included were a used 135% and a cut down 1.5 ounce asymmetrical.

The boat is an Olsen 29 with asymmetrical spinnakers set on a bowsprit and a bulb added to the keel. This whole project is a good example of good sailors can do on a VERY WELL prepared boat.

I wish we had a better picture of this mainsail. It was a prototype sail that started as a worn out conventional main. Then, we added 3 feet of roach. So much roach, in fact, the backstay had to be removed! Although the skipper says he was not intimidated by the thought of no backstay, the rating penalty made it impractical.
