Projects - 2005

Beneteau 47.7 - "Pretty Woman" is a French built production racer-cruiser that came to Pensacola in late 2003 with an owner who had just spent 3 years doing some racing, but mostly cruising the boat around England, the Med and brought the boat across from Europe in the ARC regatta.

All of the fore/aft sails are from Dimension GPL carbon. The delivery main and furling 130  have Dacron taffeta on both sides for chafe resistance and general durability. The racing main has the standard 5 battens, 2 reefs and loose foot. The racing headsail inventory consists of Light #1, all purpose #1 and Blade. The spinnakers include a .5 oz VMG, .6 oz and .75 oz all purpose designs and a heavy reacher, all out of Bainbridge Diax nylon.

The racing on Pensacola Bay went very well when the breeze was over 10 kts but it was hard to tell how we were doing since the next fastest boat rated 40 sec/mile slower. We did well against the New Orleans fleet in the Gulfport to Pensacola offshore race, getting beat by the fastest of the three J/130s.

At Key West Race Week the breeze was on, the sails were fast and the crew did a great job of keeping the boat under the sails. Pretty Woman ended up dominating her class in every thing but the lightest air and winning with a commanding 10 point lead.

Tripp 26- I just got back from the 2005 St.Pete NOOD Regatta sailing on Tripp-nautic from Panama City Fla. We have been making sails for this class since it's inception 10 years ago and given the 14 point margin of victory in St. Pete, I'd say the work has paid off. The main is made from Dimension GPL 10 carbon w/ one full length batten in the head, loose foot and no reef. This sail covered the wind range nicely and showed zero distortion in the 20 knot races. The 155%, 135% and blade are Dimension X-tech Kevlar with the dark optic-2 coating for UV protection. The all purpose spinnaker is cut from Bainbridge Airex 600 nylon. This team was also 2nd in the 2004 NOOD and missed the Overall prize of the 2003 WFORC by one point!

Olson 29 - This boat just keeps coming back. A customer from Alabama bought the boat new and we made several suits if sails for him, eventually winning her class in Key West. Then the boat went to a single hander who renamed it Kokopelli and won his class in the Bermuda 1-2 with a bowsprit and an asymmetrical spinnaker configuration. Now the boat is now in Panama City and they too just won their class at the St. Pete NOOD regatta. The current configuration includes a symmetrical spinnaker set on a 10% penalty pole with a masthead hoist (the boat has fractional headsails). All of the headsails are Dimension X-tech Kevlar, the main is GPL carbon and the spinnakers are Bainbridge Airex.

Hunter Legend 35 - Here's a popular production boat that does what it is designed to do. This Mobile Alabama customer had so much fun in the Pensacola to Isla Mujeres Race last spring, he is re-powering the boat with new Schurr Sails to do the St. Petersburg version of the event this summer. His specifications were fast durable sails that would still be around in 10 years. The full batten main is from Dimension 360AP Dacron w/ 4 full length battens, loose foot for adjustability and 2 deep ocean racing reefs. The reefable 155% genoa is from Contender 6.5 ounce radial Dacron with a triradial panel layout, foam luff pad and Sunbrella UV cover.

J/33 - This Fort Walton Beach customer has the racing bug bad. His previous boat was purchased as a racer/cruiser and it ended up doing nothing but racing. The "new" J-boat will fit his purposes much better. The main, 155% and 135% are all Dimension GPL carbon designed with no compromise. These sails will be light fast and as durable as any laminated sails available. The seams and corner patches are put together with Ultrabond glue technology (no sewing) for light weight, smooth, seams and corners that will allow zero stretch. This is a great all around PHRF boat with fast sails and a crew that is already practicing for Key West in 2006.

International Dragon - This class is new to Schurr Sails. Like most old International classes, the Dragon rules have some quirks, but after some study it's pretty straight forward. The mainsail is from Dimension 280 AP Dacron with a super-hard HTP finish. The mast is very adjustable with runners, adjustable diamonds and of course a topmast backstay. The crew will be able to do anything they want with this sail. The Genoa is made from Dimension 240 AP -HTP with minimum luff length and maximum leech length to keep the clew low. The boat has a furling system with a zipper luff on the sail. The spinnaker is from Bainbridge Stabilkote nylon. The owner hopes to make it to the Nationals in Ohio this summer. I'm confident the sails will be as fast as the sails made by lofts who are more established in this prestigious class.
